Making friends with Mr. Coffee

We’re guessing you’re familiar with the good old American drip coffee machine. Mr. Coffee? Yep, that’s the one.

It can be tricky getting great coffee out of a drip machine because you usually can’t control all the variables. But fear not! You can control a number of the key ones (coffee freshness, dose, water quality, and sometimes brew time) and with a little experimentation, you can get a great cuppa.

Here are the basics:

  1. Measure out fresh-ground coffee. 2 tablespoons coffee per 6oz of water.
  2. Measure water with pot and add to machine. Typical cup marks on home brewers are 6oz.
  3. Push start. Sometimes there are special settings, like for “3-5 cups.” You can experiment with these settings to see if they change the brew time and taste.
